Hundreds of people gathered at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham for the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 bombing. The attack by Ku Klux Klan members killed four girls.

The center seeks to apply lessons learned from the 1963 bombing of the church and to create community in Birmingham's Civil Rights District.

The daughter of the original owners of the Selma on Friday helped open the Jackson House on the grounds of The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, just outside Detroit.

LaFayette laid the foundations of the Selma campaign that culminated in the passage of the Voting Rights Act. He was a Freedom Rider and helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
