Snow covers Regions Field and other parts of downtown Birmingham on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025.

Snow fell across the Birmingham area early Friday morning, making roadways dangerous, with officials urging residents to avoid travel if possible. The National Weather Service in Birmingham reports the winter storm dropped 2 inches of snow and sleet at its office.

By mid-morning, the precipitation changed to rain in Birmingham. The warmer air should create improving conditions but officials warn driving could still be dangerous. Ice could reform as temperatures fall this evening.

Many schools closed in advance of the winter weather giving children the chance to revel in the snow.

It was probably inevitable that Andrew Yeager would end up working in public radio. The son of two teachers, NPR News programs often formed the backdrop to car rides growing up. And it was probably inevitable that Andrew would end up in news after discovering the record button on his tape recorder. He still remembers his first attempted interview - his uncooperative 2-year-old sister.
