The Birmingham-based band Meteorite is popping up everywhere these days, thanks to the release of a brand new CD, spring and summer festival dates all over Alabama, XM Satellite radio, and even an appearance on the soundtrack of a television documentary. The members of Meteorite count Stevie Wonder, the Meters, Weather Report and Medeski, Martin & Wood among their favorite sources of musical inspiration, and have been steadily building a following with their shows in and around Birmingham since 2000. Realizing that their fans needed something to take home with them, they began recording tracks for an album in the summer of 2003. The fruit of their labor, "Meteorite," consisting exclusively of original material by the band, was released in mid-April on their own label, Lil' Cracker Records. The CD is available direct from the band at shows, at Meteorite's website, and at several independent retailers in Alabama.
