Birmingham native Daniel Gilliland, began whistling as a child while listening to recordings of famous whistlers such as Elmo Tanner, Bing Crosby, and Roger Whittaker. A 1978 graduate of Auburn University and a 1981 graduate of the Samford University School of Music, Mr. Gilliland has extensive performing experience in singing and whistling throughout the Southeast. A versatile singer and whistler, Dan is comfortable with the oratorio and operatic repertoire, as well as a full slate of popular and Broadway tunes.
His credits include 2002 International Whistling Champion in the Popular and Allied Arts divisions, baritone Soloist with The Alabama Symphony, Birmingham Civic Opera, and Town and Gown Theater. A highlight of Dan's career was singing and whistling with Bob Hope at the BJCC, where he whistled Elmo Tanner's famous song "Heartaches" while accompanied by Les Brown and "The Band of Renown", Bob Hope's personal orchestra. Dan currently serves as Minister of Music and Worship at Berney Points Baptist Church in addition to a busy concert schedule.
