Birmingham band Act of Congress is an acoustic blend of bluegrass, rock and jazz -- a style often referred to as newgrass. Adam Wright and Chris Griffin began playing together casually at the University of Montevallo in 2001. They later added bass player Tim Carroll, and violinist Bethany Borg. Each member of the group has a different musical background which contributes to the band's diverse sound.
In 2007, Act of Congress worked with Live Nation, opening VIP areas for artists such as John Mayer, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, and Brooks and Dunn. Act of Congress was also a finalist in the 2007 Cultural Alliance "Grants for Individual Artists" competition. Because of their musical diversity (symphony, jazz and bluegrass musicians) they have been a favorite at Birmigham venues such as Workplay and B&A Warehouse, as well as high profile weddings, festivals, and corporate events over the last two years.
