Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM Fall Membership Drive to Feature Open House, Community Guests

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM/WSGN 91.5 FM’s Fall 20102 Membership Drive will begin Wednesday, Oct. 10 – and this year, along with opening up the phone lines, the station will be opening its doors to the community with an Open House.

Set for Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. until noon, the Membership Drive Open House will give the public an opportunity to tour the station, meet the WBHM team and record a favorite public radio memory or driveway moment. Breakfast snacks will be provided by Crestline Bagel and Cantata Coffee. Directions to the station, located at 650 11th St. South, are available online.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 15, notable business and civic leaders and community personalities will be guest hosts for the station’s Fall 2012 Membership Drive, with everyone from UAB’s interim president to a local, award-winning mixologist scheduled to take a turn at the mic. Listen each morning and evening through Friday, Oct. 19 for them and others, including representatives of the Friends of WBHM community advisory board and the WBHM Junior Advisors, as well as leaders in the business, arts, education and legal communities.

“NPR is a network fueled by member stations like WBHM, and WBHM is sustained by our listener members,” says WBHM General Manager Scott Hanley. “From our recent Radio Clinic effort, we learned how much people care about their public radio station, how they were keen to listen and be heard as an active participant in our public service. Making the step from listener to member is a powerful way to make WBHM better, and become a part of the larger community of public radio, nationwide.”

Listener support is WBHM’s chief source of funding; the station also receives significant funding from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, various grants, business underwriting and donations of vehicles. General donations and donations in honor of specific guests (a complete list is below) may be made in advance and during the drive by calling 800-444-9246 or online. The station’s goal for listener donations in calendar year 2012 is $750,000.
