Heritage Pipes & Drums of Birmingham is a volunteer organization consisting of individuals of all ages and backgrounds that love the Scottish bagpipe and its music. HPD was founded more than thirty years ago by the late Pipe Major Emeritus Ian Sturrock, the first piper in the state of Alabama. Under its previous incarnation the Ben Dearg Pipe Band, then Governor George Wallace actually named the band the Official Sate Pipe Band of Alabama. As a cultural unit organized as a part of Trinity Presbyterian Church and Heritage Academy of Birmingham, HPD functions not only as a parade and performance bagpipe band, but also as a teaching institution for Scottish piping and drumming.

Heritage Pipes & Drums is under the direction of Pipe Major Ryan Morrison, Assistant Pipe Major Kathleen Ryan, Drum Sergeant Ben Smolin, and Drum Corporal Kyra Key.
